Board vs. Picket

Board

Cedar boards are flat on all four sides and planed smooth
Standard cedar boards are typically 1″ x 4″
Board tops can be left flat or cut into a variety of different styles. (see our wood fence styles page)

Picket

Cedar pickets are flat on one side and curved on the face and planed smooth
Standard cedar pickets typically measure 2 3/4″
Pickets typically have pointed or gothic style top and are primarily used for stockade fence

Doweled vs. Nail-On

Doweled

Doweled style fence typically features a backer rail that is molded to a 2″ dowel at the ends.
With Doweled style fencing, the weight of the fence panel is supported by the actual fence rails
With Doweled style fencing the posts are visible between the panels on both sides of the fence

Nail-On

Nail-on style fence typically features a square backer rail which is secured to the face of a post
With Nail-on style fencing, the entire weight of the fence panel is supported by the fastener
With Nail-on style fencing the posts are not visible from the “good” side
